StartCom SSL: Using Certificates and Smart Cards for Login

startcom ssl

The number of providers listed on Spread OpenID is growing even more. We have added StartCom SSL to the provider listing today.

StartCom SSL allows login by client certificates and smart cards. It is a welcome trend that OpenID providers are adding more secure layers to the usual username/password login method to their services. This will hopefully further the acceptance and use of OpenID even more.

Xlogon: German OpenID Provider Added

xlogon

Just three days have passed since the last post, but sooner than we have thought here is another one.

We have added Xlogon to the provider list. While we don’t want to recommend any providers listed here, we are actually quite happy about this addition. Xlogon is a German OpenID provider, so you can guess we have watched its development rather carefully since the launch in Spring of last year.

If you want to test this provider, keep in mind that (including Terms of Service) are in German which might be a problem if you don’t know the language. Update: See Boris’ (Xlogon) comment for more information on an English version of the website.

More Providers Added to Comparison Page

More than a month has passed by since the last blog post on Spread OpenID. So it’s time to report about two new additions to the comparison page: the Estonian OpenID provider which is linked to the Estonian identity card, and Yahoo!’s OpenID provider.

Both projects are very interesting, we think. Yahoo! is one of the major players on the internet and it is providing a very simple and easy to understand implementation of OpenID. It’s cool to see tutorials and explanations on all steps during the login process.

Estonia certainly offers one of the most progressive projects related to eGovernment. The identity card is the basis of a lot of services: electronic voting, an email address valid for citizens’ lifetime, embedded certificates for encryption, and much more. The OpenID provider is using this identity card as well.

We have also added a contact form on the About page. If you want to add your provider to Spread OpenID, change details of your listing on the provider page, or if you just have some questions, please use that contact form. Thanks! :)
